Allen bound for Heat despite Celts' bigger offer

Posted: July 08, 2012

MIAMI - Ray Allen, the NBA record holder for three- point goals, told the Miami Heat he intends to accept their contract offer and leave Boston after five seasons.

Allen made the move Friday night, even though the Celtics could pay him about twice as much as Miami will be able to next season. Miami could offer Allen only the mini mid-level, worth about $3 million a year.

Allen, 37, cannot officially sign until Wednesday.

Miami wanted Allen because of its ongoing quest to keep surrounding its superstar core of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh with shooters who extend defenses and therefore create room around the basket for the big three to attack.

Allen has made an NBA-record 2,718 three-pointers.

Kidd-Gilcrist signs

The Charlotte Bobcats signed first-round draft pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed for the former Kentucky standout, who was selected with the second overall pick of last month's draft.

The 6-foot-7 Kidd-Gilchrist spent just one season at Kentucky and helped the Wildcats to the national championship. He averaged 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 40 games.

A native of Somerdale in Camden County, he played at St. Patrick of Elizabeth, N.J.
