Utility crews were working to restore service to thousands of customers who lost electricity when a line of strong, fast-moving storms blew through central and southern New Jersey.

Nearly 70,000 customers lost service when the severe storms hit Saturday night. The storms included lightning and strong winds that gusted more than 70 m.p.h. and knocked down numerous trees and power lines across the region.

Jersey Central Power & Light says more than 39,000 Monmouth County customers lost power at the height of the storm, while more than 25,000 in Ocean County had no service. By Sunday night, about 5,000 customers still had no electricity. - AP
