A 86-year-old woman was beaten in her bed by a man who awakened her in her Northeast Philadelphia apartment and demanded money, police said.

The woman suffered a fractured orbital to her left eye and facial contusions in the 1:30 a.m. attack in her second-floor unit in the Meadowview Apartments, 8100 Algon Ave., in the Rhawnhurst section, police said. She was reported in stable condition at Aria Health's Torresdale campus.

The victim, who does not speak English well, could not provide a description of her attacker except to say she heard him ask for money before pummeling her.

Police said the intruder possibly gained entrance through an unlocked front door.

Chief Inspector Scott Small told news crews at the scene the woman summoned help through a necklace with an alert button that automatically signaled the city Fire Department. Firefighters responding to the scene realized the nature of the woman's injuries "were so severe" that it was obvious she was assaulted, Small said.
