Phils' minor leaguer suspended for drug violation

PHILLIES MINOR LEAGUE prospect Ranger Suarez, who is on the roster of the team's Venezuelan Summer League squad, has been suspended 50 games for violating baseball's minor league drug program.

The commissioner's office announced Thursday that Suarez, a lefthanded pitcher, tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol. His suspension is effective immediately. He had two saves in three appearances this season, striking out four in five scoreless innings.

Also, free-agent pitcher Daniel Cordero was suspended 50 games for the same violation. His punishment will begin as soon as he signs with a major league organization.

Ruiz honored

Carlos Ruiz has been named the Phillies' winner of the Heart and Hustle Award, given by the MLB players alumni association.

The award is given for players who "demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game."

One player from each team is selected. Mike Trout, of Millville, N.J., is the Angels' winner.

An overall winner will be announced on Nov. 13 in New York. The event helps raise money for free youth baseball clinics that are provided for more than 6,500 kids each year. Roy Halladay was the 2010 overall winner.
