Mavericks claim Brand off waivers

The Sixers' loss is the Dallas Mavericks' gain.

The Mavericks won the bidding to obtain Brand off waivers, but did not reveal the winning bid. ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported Friday that it was $2.1 million.

The Sixers decided to free up some salary-cap space by utilizing the one-time amnesty clause on Elton Brand. The $18.1 million he is owed in the final season of his 5-year deal does not count against their salary cap or luxury tax. Brand will still get that full amount, with Philadelphia paying any difference.

"Elton Brand is the ultimate pro," Sixers coach Doug Collins said Friday from Orlando, where the Sixers completed their first summer-league session of the offseason. "Every single night, he came and gave us every single thing that he had, and was a huge part of the last couple of years and the success we had in trying to move forward. We're going to miss E.B."

Brand average 13.9 points and 7.4 rebounds in his four injury-plagued seasons with the Sixers.

Brand will turn 34 next March.

Silas hurt in loss

In the final game of the Sixers' Orlando Summer League session, guard Xavier Silas suffered a concussion and possible frontal bone skull fracture. the injury happened during a collision in which Silas and a Detroit Piston banged heads.

Silas will undergo further tests in Florida.

The Sixers fell to the Pistons, 71-67, in their final game to finish the summer league series at 1-4. Devin Searcy collected 10 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Sixers.
