Main Line’s Hymie’s robbed by three armed men

Three armed and masked men robbed Hymie's Delicatessen and Family Restaurant, a popular Main Line eatery, late Saturday night, police said.

The robbers forced customers and employees on the floor of the 55-year-old Jewish deli on Montgomery Avenue in Lower Merion Township around 9 p.m., shortly before closing, a manager and an employee said Sunday.

No one was hurt. The men made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and personal property, police said.

During the robbery, a quick-thinking manager whispered to a cashier to call police before he joined the customers on the floor.

"It was confusing at first," Michelle Horev, the cashier, said of the plea to call for help from her manager.

But Horev, 18, said: "Something just told me . . . 'There is something bad about to happen, you need to dial 911.'"

Horev said she saw the robbers forcing patrons on the floor in another part of the restaurant. She took the phone, hid and quickly dialed authorities, she said.

Then, she said, she joined her colleagues and customers on the floor, she said.

The men covered their faces with bandanas. Police described the weapons as a shotgun and handgun.

Horev said the trio appeared to be scared off by the presence of a car outside the restaurant.

Police called back within minutes, Horev said. Officers arrived shortly after the robbery, police said.
