PHILLY'S airport is flying high.
City officials yesterday announced that Spirit Airlines, a budget carrier, will soon offer flights from Philadelphia International Airport to Dallas/Fort Worth. Spirit is the third new airline to add Philly routes in the past six months, following similar announcements from Virgin America and Alaska Airlines.
"We have not had new airlines in eight years and now we have three," said Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities Rina Cutler. "We're very excited."
Spirit now operates only out of the Atlantic City airport in this region. The airline's flights from Philadelphia will start in April 2013, initially flying four times a week between the cities, followed by daily flights starting that June.
Cutler said the city continues to press forward with plans to expand the airport to include another runway and a new terminal. The expansion, which will happen in phases, will take 10 to 12 years to complete and negotiations about the process continue, Cutler said.
