Jamie Moyer still wants to play

JAMIE MOYER wanted to make it clear. So clear that he said it twice:

"I'm not retired. I'm not retired," he said Wednesday at a news conference at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament at Lake Tahoe, Nev. "I'm just kind of laying in the weeds and just trying to figure out what's going on."

The 49-year-old Moyer last pitched in the majors for the Rockies, where on May 16 he became the oldest pitcher to ever record a win in a 6-1 victory over the Diamondbacks. Colorado cut him on June 1 and he has had stints in the Orioles' and Blue Jays' minor league organizations before being released by Toronto on July 5.

Moyer, who was with the Phillies from 2006-2010, said his agent is trying to find a team for him but so far there aren't any takers. If he does return, he said he still sees himself as a starter.

"I'm surely not a specialist," he said. "I'm not a closer. I'm not a setup guy. It's either a long guy probably, or a starter. And that's what I've done most of my career is start. So if I have any value left, I think that's where it might be."

Moyer, an avid golfer, finished tied for 71st in last year's American Century.

This year, his odds to win are 8-1, which sadly, are probably better than his chances of returning to the major leagues.

Fitzgerald down on QBs

Should fantasy football players in need of a wide receiver select the Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald or the Lions' Calvin "Megatron" Johnson?

Take Johnson, said Fitzgerald, noting Detroit has the better quarterback. Johnson's QB is Matthew Stafford. Fitzgerald's are either Kevin Kolb or John Skelton.

"Megatron and Matthew Stafford have a great connection up there in Detroit," Fitzgerald said on MLive.com. "They put together a phenomenal year — 5,000 yards by Stafford — so I would definitely take Megatron and Matthew Stafford. They got it going. We have some questions right now in Arizona. We've got to work training camp out to figure out who our starting quarterback is going to be. So as of today, I think that's the safe choice." n
