Body of missing teen found in Delaware River

Posted: July 20, 2012

A body of a 16-year-old who went missing yesterday while tubing on the Delaware River was found this afternoon near the place where he had disappeared, authorities said.

The South Jersey teen was part of a group of six from Willingboro who rented tubes early Wednesday from Delaware River Tubing near the Kingwood boat launch not far from Frenchtown.

About a half-mile downstream, the teen became separated from his tube near Treasure Island and tried to swim upstream to retrieve it, said Anthony P. Kearns, the Hunterdon County prosecutor. The teen had disappeared into the water.

One of the adults in the group waived down a bicyclist and called 911, Kearns said.

"None in the party were wearing personal flotation devices," he said.

A state police helicopter search was called off midafternoon yesterday when violent storms swept through the area.

This afternoon at 1:30, divers directed by New Jersey State Police found the teen's body, near to where he had disappeared, under eight feet of water.

Authorities did not release the name of the boy.
