5 teens arrested in Philly rec center rape

Police announced the arrests Thursday of five teenagers in the case of a girl, 12, who was raped this week at a Southwest Philadelphia recreation center.

Investigators had said four teens had been arrested as of Thursday afternoon. Hours later, police confirmed that a fifth boy was in custody. Police said an aunt had brought him to the Special Victims Unit.

The suspects, whose names were not released because of their ages, are 14 and 15, police said. They are charged with rape, simple assault, and other offenses.

The girl, who has not been identified, told police she was approached Monday night by several boys who started talking to her at the Francis Myers Recreation Center in the Kingsessing section. At some point, the situation changed, police said, and the boys lured her to an upstairs stairwell, where she was attacked.

That night, the gym was being used for line dancing and basketball, and it was filled with teenagers. A staff member went to the stairwell after seeing several boys running from the area, police said, and the distraught girl was found there.
