Smith Kids Play Place in the Park's 113th Birthday
On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., kids 10 and younger and their caregivers are invited to join Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse for its big birthday bash celebrating 113 years of providing a free play place for children and families.
The party will feature fun and educational activities: The Phillie Phanatic will stop by from 10:45 to 11:15, and the Eagles Book Mobile will roll through, with the Eagles Storybook Man reading stories aloud. Soccer Shots Philadelphia will do pop-up demos from 10:30 to 11:30. Kids can munch on birthday cake and play on the 6½-acre playground. Families will have the opportunity to buy tickets to the Sept. 25 Phillies game against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park, with $3 of each ticket sale benefiting Smith.
Smith's 113th Birthday Party, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse, 33d Avenue and Oxford Street in East Fairmount Park, just above Kelly Drive. Seafarin' Saturdays
Learn "The Art of Scrimshaw" at Independence Seaport Museum, part of the monthly hands-on family program Seafarin' Saturdays.
From 1 to 3 p.m., learn about the craft of scrimshaw, in which sailors make art carved out of whale teeth and sea animal tusks. Try your hand at being a scrimshander using soap. For artistic inspiration, check out the museum's collection of scrimshaw before starting your craft.
