Voorhees officer accused of being over-friendly

Posted: July 23, 2012

A Voorhees police officer was charged Monday with abusing his police powers for personal reasons after he obtained a motorist's information from a state database and then found her on Facebook, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and Voorhees police said.

Jeffrey M. Tyther, 44, of Voorhees, was suspended without pay Saturday. The 14-year veteran, who is a divorced father of two according to an individual familiar with the department, turned himself in to state police on Monday. He was released on a summons after being charged with computer theft and violating the Motor Vehicle Record Law.

Nearly a year ago, Tyther was on duty in a marked cruiser when he saw the motorist pass him, police said. He pulled behind her, then next to her and waved. But Tyther never pulled the motorist over or issued her a ticket, authorities said. Tyther and the woman also never spoke.

On Sept. 9, 2011, he used the state police's motor vehicle database to get her personal information. When she didn't respond to his "friend" request, he e-mailed her, saying he was the officer who had waved at her that week. The woman told a coworker, who called police.    - Darran Simon
