Best-ever 'Batman' debut

During the weekend, the national box office was officially silent, with major studios withholding release of grosses from major films in the wake of the Aurora shootings.

But Monday, several venues released official box-office figures for the three-day weekend. Despite all the horror, The Dark Knight Rises beggared all competition, with a whopping $161.1 million take, less than expected but remarkable under the circumstances, according to industry watchdog site ScreenRant. It's the best Batman debut ever (2008's The Dark Knight made $158 million), third-best three-day weekend opening ever, and best-ever non-3D opener.

Second place went to Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, with $20.2 million. The rest of the top 10 were (3) The Amazing Spider-Man, $10.7 million; (4) Ted, $10.2 million; (5) Brave, $5.8 million; (6) Magic Mike, $4.3 million; (7) Savages, $3.3 million; (8) Madea's Witness Protection, $2.2 million; (9) Moonrise Kingdom, $1.9 million; and (10) Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, $1.5 million, the most successful Madagascar film yet.
