Posted: July 24, 2012

CAST IN bronze, the Joe Paterno statue is about 7 feet tall and about 1,000 pounds. It stood outside Penn State's football stadium since 2001 until Sunday.

Designed by Angelo DiMaria and built by Yesid Gomez and Wilfer Buitrago.

Inscriptions: "Joseph Vincent Paterno: Educator, Coach, Humanitarian." Next to that is a quote from Paterno: "They ask me what I'd like written about me when I'm gone. I hope they write I made Penn State a better place not just that I was a good football coach."

Dedicated: Nov. 2, 2001, before a homecoming-game victory over Southern Mississippi. The Lions went 5-6 that season.

Cost: About $100,000.

Time: About??? 4,000 hours to build.

Paterno's record before the statue went up: 324-94-3 (.773), 20-9-1 in bowls.

Paterno's record after the statue went up: 85-42 (.669), 4-3 in bowls.

Did you know:? In 2009, vandals cut off Paterno's glasses, and the university replaced them.

Quote to note: "You go to a Penn State football game and there's 100,000 people down there and they got that statue and you know doggone well they'll start talking about Sandusky," former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden told the Associated Press recently.
