Bandits knock first, kill man in W. Oak Lane home

Posted: July 25, 2012

Philadelphia homicide detectives are investigating the fatal overnight shooting of man in a West Oak Lane home that began when a woman knocked at the door.

Police say the incident began about 11:50 p.m. Monday when a woman, said to be in her 20s, knocked at the door of a home on the 6700 block of Gratz Street.

An 84-year-old father opened the door to the two-story, red brick, rowhouse.

Then, two bandits forced their way into the home, with at least one of them firing multiple shots at the man's 43-year old son.

The son was pronounced dead at the scene at midnight.

Homicide detectives say the motive is unclear.

It's possible the shooting was part of a robbery gone awry, they say. But nothing was taken and the house did not appear to be ransacked.

It's also possible the killing was a deliberate hit.

Police have no suspects and the incident is under investigation.
