A Franklin Township man was sentenced Friday to six years in a treatment center after pleading guilty to fondling a 9-year-old girl.

Robert E. Whirlow, 48, had pleaded guilty to fondling the daughter of a family friend. He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Walter L. Marshall Jr. to serve the six years at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center, a facility for sex offenders in Avenel, Middlesex County.

Marshall ordered confinement after an examination at the center concluded Whirlow was a "repetitive and compulsive" sex offender and would be appropriate for treatment, officials said.

Whirlow will be subject to requirements of Megan's Law for sex offenders and to parole supervision for at least 15 years after he is released. - Barbara Boyer
