Sports in Brief: Guerrero fighting for more than title

Posted: July 28, 2012

A sixth world title and a possible big-money date with Floyd Mayweather Jr. pale in comparison to what's really on the line for Robert Guerrero each time he steps into the boxing ring.

After putting his career on hold to help his wife battle through leukemia, Guerrero is fighting for all those patients waiting for a donor like the one who saved Casey Guerrero's life two years ago.

A win on Saturday night in San Jose, Calif., over Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 knockouts) would give Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 knockouts) the interim WBC welterweight title and a bigger platform to encourage people to sign up for bone-marrow donor registries.

In Atlantic City, Philadelphia's Hank Lundy (22-2-1, 11 KOs) lost by judges' decision to Rey Beltran (26-6, 17 KOs) in a 10-round feature bout that saw Beltran claim the NABF lightweight title.

One card was scored even at 95-95, while the other two judges cards were marked, 96-94, in favor of Beltran.

Two of the four-round fights on the undercard featured Vineland heavyweight Ismael Garcia vs. Kenneth Moody and junior welterweight Korey Sloane of Philadelphia vs. Josh Mercado of Wildwood Crest.

HORSE RACING: Parx Racing will host two state-bred stakes Saturday afternoon, the $75,000 Crowd Pleaser Handicap and the $75,000 Power By Far Stakes.

The Crowd Pleaser is for 3-year-olds and is run on the turf at 11/16 miles, while the Power By Far is a 6-furlong main-track sprint for fillies and mares 3 years and older.

The probable favorite in the Power By Far looks to be Darn That Raven. The 4-year-old has come into her own this spring and is looking for her second stakes win of the season.

NBA: The Minnesota Timberwolves signed free agent Andrei Kirilenko, bringing the versatile forward back to the NBA after a one-season absence.

The Hornets, Suns and Timberwolves completed a deal that sends 7-foot center Robin Lopez and forward Hakim Warrick from Phoenix to New Orleans, while moving forward Wesley Johnson and a first-round draft pick from Minnesota to the Suns.

Word of the multiplayer trade first broke on Wednesday, though the final version had minor changes.

NHL: The Winnipeg Jets signed defenseman Toby Enstrom to a $28.75 million, five-year contract extension.

SOCCER: The French Football Federation said it has banned midfielder Samir Nasri for three matches because of his undisciplined behavior at the European Championship.

Chelsea captain John Terry was charged by the English Football Association with racially abusing an opponent, two weeks after he was cleared by a court of the same offense.

AUTO RACING: Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time during the second practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, while Michael Schumacher appeared unhurt after crashing into a tire wall.
