H. Roberts Lorenz, 79, pastor and musician

The Rev. H. Roberts Lorenz, 79, who served for 24 years at St. John's Episcopal Church in Compass, Chester County, died Thursday, July 26, at Meadow Ridge, Tel Hai Retirement Community, in Honey Brook.

Born Dec. 15, 1932, in Norristown, he received a bachelor's degree from Maryville College in Tennessee and a master of divinity degree from the Philadelphia Divinity School in 1958.

Father Lorenz, who also received a master's degree in music history from West Chester University, brought song to his congregations.

He was appointed to St. Luke's in Kensington in 1958 and soon became rector.

In 1969, he served at Ascension Episcopal Church, Parkesburg. In 1971, he was assigned to the parish of St. John's in Compass. In 1973, he began serving full time there.

In addition to his parochial duties, he served the Brandywine Deanery as secretary for several years.

In his work, he developed choirs for adults, youth, and children and wrote music for them.

After he retired in 1997, Father Lorenz served as liturgical assistant at St. John's in Lancaster from 1998 to early 2012, when he returned to St. John's, Compass.

Father Lorenz and his wife of 53 years, Joan, moved to Tel Hai in 2010. There, he sang in the choir and participated in the Thursday morning Bible-study group.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, David and Christopher, and daughter, Jennifer; six grandchildren; and his brothers, Paul and John.

A Hymn Festival will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at St. John's, 321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster.

A Funeral Eucharist will be at St. John's, Compass, 1520 W. Kings Highway, Gap, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund at St. John's, Compass, or the music fund at St. John's in Lancaster.
