Downpours possible, then a heat wave

Posted: August 02, 2012

August begins with another round of July-like weather, with thunderstorms expected today, followed by a possible heat wave - and more thunderstorms.

"Heat index values, particularly in urban areas, could approach 100 degrees Friday through Sunday," according to the National Weather Service.

Today, showers and thunderstorms could develop by midday, with "gusty winds and heavy downpours" possible.

The threat could continue through the afternoon rush hour, but should diminish by nightfall.

Today's high should be in the mid 80s, but Thursday could see the low 90s, followed by the mid 90s Friday through Sunday.

Afternoon thunderstorms are possible Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the chances of rain at just 20 to 30 percent.

Thunderstorms are also possible Sunday and Monday.

With predicted highs in the upper 80s for Monday and Tuesday, the heat wave could continue.
