A former Philadelphia Department of Health clerk faces federal charges for allegedly distributing hundreds of tablets of Percocet, OxyContin, and Endocet.

Maria Josey, 46, of Philadelphia, was arrested today after being indicted by a federal grand jury on distribution of controlled substances charges.

Josey was also charged with misusing of a Drug Enforcement Administration registration number on prescription pads to obtain oxycodone, said United States Attorney Zane David Memeger.

Josey was working as a clerk typist at a city health care center in 2009 and 2010 when she illegally distributed the narcotic pain killers to various people, according to the indictment.

The 26-count indictment also said Josey used the DEA registration number issued to another person to acquire oxycodone.

If convicted of all charges, Josey faces a maximum sentence of 3 1/2 years imprisonment, three years supervised release, and a fine of up to $16.25 million.

This case was investigated by the City of Philadelphia Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.

It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney A. Nicole Phillips.
