Gunman sought in salon robberies

Philadelphia police are searching for the gunman who was caught on surveillance video during two violent West Philadelphia nail salon stick-ups. A store camera appears to have caught a clean shot of the man, Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said.

Around 11 a.m. Thursday, the gunman burst into the Myly Nail Salon on the 6200 block Lansdowne Avenue and pointed a small handgun at the store owner as she was working on a customer. He told the woman "to shut up unless you want to die," Walker said, before fleeing with $100. About two hours later, the same gunman strode into Tanya Nails on Chestnut Street. He took money from the shop, then ordered the women to empty their pockets and struck the owner with his weapon, lacerating her face, Walker said. Police ask tipsters to contact Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3183. - Mike Newall
