Police keep eye on Delco Sikh temple

Posted: August 06, 2012

In the wake of the shooting rampage outside Milwaukee, police in a tiny Delaware County borough, home to a thriving Sikh community, plan to keep an eye on the temple there.

Millbourne Mayor Tom Kramer said Sunday nighrt he had spoken with members of the Sikh community, including Gurbaksh Basra, a member of the Borough Council, after Sunday's Wisconsin incident, in which a gunman attacked a Sikh temple and shot six people to death.

He said the Philadelphia Sikh Society and its temple haven't experienced any vandalism or anything else that would raise concerns.

"We're keeping an eye on things," Kramer said. "I don't anticipate any trouble."

Millbourne, wedged between West Philadelphia and Upper Darby, has fewer than 1,200 people, but 56 percent identified as Asian, according to the 2010 census.

The borough has about a dozen part-time police officers, and at least one officer is on duty at all times.

Kramer said he spoke to the police chief and the on-duty officer Sunday night, and they promised to patrol the temple and park in the lot.
