Villanova probing whether new assistant basketball coach gave false information on resume

Posted: August 12, 2012

Personnel officials at Villanova are investigating whether newly hired assistant basketball coach Doug Martin gave erroneous information on his resumé.

The discrepancy, which was first reported by ESPN.com, concerns Martin's college basketball career and whether he played at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

"We are looking into it," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said in a text message.

The hiring of Martin, who has coached in the Continental Basketball Association, high school, and AAU basketball, was announced Monday in a statement. The statement said he "played collegiate basketball at UW-Green Bay for coach Dick Bennett from 1991-95."

However, the history link of Green Bay's basketball website does not show a Doug Martin on its all-time roster.

Andrew Gavin, Green Bay's director of athletic communications, said via e-mail he had "not found any records of a Doug Martin playing at Green Bay." He said he checked final statistics from the 1990-91 through the 1994-95 seasons, plus media guides and postseason media guides for four of those five seasons but none mentioned Martin. He said he could not locate a media guide from 1992-93 but that Martin is not listed in statistics from that season.

Martin could not be reached for comment.

ESPN.com discovered a LinkedIn profile for Martin, which has since been taken down, that had him receiving bachelor's degrees from both Green Bay and Viterbo University, an NAIA school in La Crosse, Wis. Viterbo's basketball website listed a Doug Martin, who played between 1990 and 1994, on its all-time roster.

There is no mention of Viterbo in the Villanova release announcing Martin's hiring.
