Dorothy K. Phillips, 69, who practiced family law in the Philadelphia region for more than 30 years, died of cancer Monday, Aug. 13, at Saunders House, a long-term care center in Wynnewood.

At Dorothy K. Phillips & Associates, the Philadelphia firm where she practiced until early 2012, "she always tried to foster reconciliation before filing for divorce," her daughter, Bethann Schaffzin, said Tuesday.

Ms. Phillips wrote a monthly column, "Domestic Disputes," for the Pennsylvania Law Weekly through the last decade, her daughter said.

Her writings were published in Harper's Bazaar, the Wall Street Journal, the Legal Intelligencer, the Philadelphia Business Journal, Philadelphia magazine, and The Inquirer, her daughter said.

"They were articles on things like same-sex custody agreements and parental custody," she said.

Ms. Phillips was interviewed for programs on CNN and local TV stations, her daughter said, "usually commenting on some current events in custody or divorce."

Ms. Phillips was cited in Philadelphia magazine articles with titles such as "Top 50 Female Attorneys in Philadelphia" and "Pennsylvania Super Lawyers," her daughter said.

She argued cases not only in Philadelphia and its four suburban counties, but also in Pennsylvania appellate court and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Born in Camden, Ms. Phillips earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and a master's from New York University in 1974, before graduating in 1978 from the Villanova University School of Law.

Before Ms. Phillips earned her law degree, her daughter said, "she was a marriage counselor, as a therapist in Philadelphia."

Besides her daughter, Ms. Phillips is survived by a son, David, and four grandchildren. She also is survived by her former husband, Elliott Schaffzin.

A funeral service was scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Main Line Reform Temple, 410 Montgomery Ave., Wynnewood, with interment in Crescent Memorial Park, Pennsauken.
