Before officer shot, three other homicides

The shooting death of police officer Moses Walker Jr. capped off a night of violence in the city that saw three deaths by gunfire and multiple stabbings.

There have been no arrests in any of the cases, police spokesperson Officer Tanya Little said.

Police said there were no witnesses or known motives for any of the incidents.

The first death occurred at 11:40 p.m. when a 47-year-old black male was shot once in the head on West Rockland Street in Logan. The victim was transported to Einstein Medical Center by police and pronounced dead at 11:58 P.M.

At 12:28 A.M., a 24-year-old black male was stabbed once in the face at South 54th Street and Florence Avenue in Kingsessing while riding a SEPTA bus. Police transported the victim to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.

A shooting on the 3900 block of Lancaster Avenue on the border of Powelton and Mantua at 2:02 A.M. left a mid-20's black male in critical condition at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. The victim was shot once in the left arm and once in the stomach; no weapons were recovered by police.

Around the same time, a double stabbing at 54th street and Woodland Avenue in Kingsessing placed the two black male victims in critical condition at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. The 2:17 A.M. incident had a 24-year-old victim stabbed once in the back and once to the right shoulder, and a 48-year-old victim stabbed once in the neck, twice in the chest, and twice in the back. No weapons were recovered by police.

The night's second death occurred on the 4900 block of W. Girard Avenue in Parkside when a black male in his 20's was shot at 2:19 A.M. inside a green Toyota Camry. The victim was shot multiple times to the body, and pronounced dead at 2:28 A.M. by medics.

At 3:40 A.M., a third homicide occurred on the 2200 block of S. 63rd Street in Elmwood when a 23-year-old black male was shot once in the back and once in the right arm. The victim was pronounced dead on location at 3:50 A.M. by medics.

The night's final homicide claimed a police officer just off duty when Moses Walker Jr. of the 22nd District was shot multiple times on the 2200 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue in North Philadelphia at 5:55 A.M. Walker was out of uniform, having completed his shift at the 22nd District holding cell at 17th Street and Montgomery Avenue. Walker, 40, was a 19-year veteran of the force.
