Man drowns in popular Camden County swimming hole

Posted: August 19, 2012

A 37-year-old man drowned Thursday at a popular Camden County swimming hole despite attempts by friends to rescue him.

Water collects in the basin of a former sand and gravel quarry on Piney Hollow Road in Winslow Township, making it a haven for local swimmers in the summer, according to an employee at a nearby contractor.

Police were called at 3 p.m. after two of the man's friends were unable to rescue him from the lake, which is roughly a half-mile long and a quarter-mile wide.

Authorities searched with boats and power skis but did not find the victim until almost 7 p.m. Divers found him in 18 feet of water, approximately 60 feet from shore.

Police did not identify the victim, pending notification of family.
