At 12:28 a.m., a 24-year-old man was stabbed once in the face at South 54th Street and Florence Avenue in Kingsessing while riding a SEPTA bus. Police took the injured man to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.
A shooting on the 3900 block of Lancaster Avenue on the border of Powelton and Mantua at 2:02 a.m. left a man in critical condition at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. The victim, in his mid-20s, was shot once in the left arm and once in the stomach; no weapons were recovered by police.
Around the same time, a double stabbing at 54th Street and Woodland Avenue in the Kingsessing section left two men in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
In the 2:17 a.m. incident, a 24-year-old was stabbed once in the back and once to the right shoulder, and another victim, 48, was stabbed once in the neck, twice in the chest, and twice in the back. No weapons were recovered by police.
The night's second death occurred in the 4900 block of West Girard Avenue in Parkside when a man in his 20s was shot at 2:19 a.m. in a green Toyota Camry. The victim was shot several times to the body, and pronounced dead at 2:28 by medics.
At 3:40 a.m., a third homicide occurred, on the 2200 block of South 63d Street in Elmwood, when a 23-year-old man was shot once in the back and once in the right arm. The victim was pronounced dead on location at 3:50.
The night's final homicide claimed Police Officer Moses Walker Jr., 40.
He was shot in the 2000 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue in North Philadelphia at 5:55 a.m. Walker was out of uniform and walking to catch a bus, having completed his shift at the 22d District.
