Cards' Kolb running for his reputation

KEVIN KOLB HAS had a pretty miserable preseason. The Cardinals quarterback came into his team's third preseason game with a quarterback rating of 0.0. Just when the former Eagles QB thought things couldn't get worse, they did.

On Friday, in little more than a quarter of work against the Oakland Raiders' first-team defense, Kolb completed three of six passes for 22 yards, misfiring on his last three passes. Late in the first quarter, the bottom fell out. On second down from his 11-yard line, Kolb tried to throw a pass across his body under pressure. He was flagged for intentional grounding, putting the ball at the 1. On third down, Kolb had happy feet in the end zone and was sacked by Raiders defensive lineman Tommy Kelly for a safety. Kelly came running off the field screaming, "That boy's scared."

"He is skittish," Kelly said of Kolb after the game. "He is scared back there. Anytime anybody gets close to him, he starts looking at the refs. As a defensive lineman, you love a quarterback like that."

"Scared? Scared of what?" Kolb told Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official website. "Taking a hit? I have never been afraid of anyone on the field and that will never change. That includes Number 93 [Kelly].

"I don't mind people criticizing my play. Don't ever question my toughness."

Danica gets soled

Danica Patrick paid quite a price for a shoe in Montreal.

While she was leading Saturday's Nationwide Series race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, someone tossed a shoe onto the track, and the shoe landed in the racing groove. As Patrick led the field back to the spot where the shoe was, she ran over it and the shredded shoe shot out under the driver's side of the car.

No cars skidded or altered course. No harm done, right? Not quite. Patrick's No. 7 car immediately started to lose the handling and eventually what looked to be a bracket or a bolt came out from underneath her car. Patrick's chances at the win were over and she finished 26th, six laps down.

Needless to say, Danica was not a sole survivor.
