Florence Mack, 84, long-time organist

Posted: August 24, 2012

FLORENCE JONES knew from childhood that she was meant for a career in music.

As a student at Barratt Junior High School, she wrote in the yearbook that she wanted to be a music directress. In her 70-year career in music, she did just that, directing choirs and playing the organ at a number of local churches.

Florencia Maylee Mack - as she became after marrying William Kenneth Mack - a talented woman whose career also included giving private music lessons and comforting the bereaved with organ music at local funeral homes, died Aug. 16. She was 84 and lived in Kensington.

Florence, as she was known to family and friends, was proud of her West Indian and Spanish roots. She was born in Philadelphia to Alfred and Mable Evelyn Jones. She graduated from South Philadelphia High School and received an undergraduate degree from the former Combs College of Music.

She played the organ at several funeral homes and was employed as an organist for 25 years at the Ray Funeral Home at Dauphin and Sydenham streets. Florence led the male, gospel and sanctuary choirs of her church, Tasker Street Missionary Baptist.

Her signature performances were cantatas during the Easter and Christmas seasons.

She also was organist and musical director for the True Vine Baptist Church, Transfiguration Baptist, Simpson Fletcher United Methodist and Berry Long United Methodist. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star.

"Florence was known for her dominant, feisty and humorous personality," her family said.

She is survived by three daughters, Kenesta T. Mack, Bernice McIntyre and Eugenia McFadden; two sons, Patrick George and Eugene George; and four grandchildren. Besides her sisters, she was predeceased by her partner of 35 years, Eugene George, who died in 2011.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Tasker Street Baptist Church, 2010 Tasker St. Eastern Star service 10 a.m. Friends may call at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave.
