Lewis transferring from Delaware to La Salle

Posted: August 29, 2012

THE BEST game Khalid Lewis played in his first season at Delaware was on Dec. 19, 2011, against La Salle. He scored a season-high 18 points as UD won, 70-66.

Lewis shot 5-for-6, 2-for-2 from three and 6-for-8 from the foul line. Lewis, who started all 32 games for Delaware at point guard, scored in double figures just three more times, averaging 5.2 points and 2.6 assists on 37.7 percent shooting, 24.4 percent from the arc.

Obviously, that La Salle game made a lasting impression on the coaches of the losing team. Lewis, from Trenton Catholic Academy, has transferred to La Salle and, after sitting out this season, will be able to play in 2013-14 with three seasons of eligibility.

"Khalid gives us a proven player who played a lot of minutes as a freshman for a winning team," La Salle coach John Giannini said. "He is a very good defender and has the potential to be an outstanding player."

La Salle will lose senior Ramon Galloway after this season so Lewis should be able to find a spot in the guard rotation next year. What he won't do is displace Tyreek Duren at the point. Duren, a rising junior, will be the senior starter in 2013-14.

Lewis, whose best attribute is his defense, was a teammate of Drexel point guard Frantz Massenat on a Trenton Catholic team that went 28-3 when he was a junior. Delaware won 18 games last season.
