Jaworski in China to promote Arena Football League

Posted: August 29, 2012

RON JAWORSKI was in China this week trying to generate interest for American football in general, and the Arena Football League in particular.

Jaworski is part of a group trying to kick-start indoor leagues all around Asia, the most populous continent in the world.

"We're coming to a country that doesn't know much about what American football is, but it's a country that loves sports," Jaworski said in a story first reported on the website China.com.cn. "They will pick up on football very quickly."

The hope is for the formation of a six-team league to start up in October 2014. Maybe they can throw some padding over the iconic Great Wall.

There has been talk of the Soul playing an exhibition game against an AFL team in China next fall.

Bringing football to China has been a longtime vision for Marty Judge, co-owner of the Soul who has developed numerous Asian contacts through his West Conshohocken consulting firm. Judge is of the opinion that NFL Europe failed because the native talent went undeveloped.

As Jaworski told the website, "I watched the Olympics, and watched those [Chinese] weight lifters and I think, 'I'd like to have some of those guys on my offensive line.' "

Random observation

The Paralympics start Wednesday and Britain's defense ministry said it will have 3,500 military types available for security.

Even if it is about 25 percent of the force required for the regular Games, there's just something wrong with needing all of those people to provide security for the Paralympics.

Correction

There was a screwup in that really swell Jimmy Rollins graphic that was in Tuesday's Daily News.

We (I, actually) mistakenly remembered Rollins leading off the 2007 season finale with a triple. Rollins actually singled, stole second, stole third and scored on Chase Utley's sac fly. He hit his 20th triple later in the game as the Phils secured their first playoff spot since 1993.
