SEPTA-stalker sex creep headed home, to prison

Posted: September 06, 2012

ANORTH Philadelphia man arrested in June for raping a woman he followed off a SEPTA subway train in May has pleaded guilty to that attack and to sexually assaulting two other women.

Joseph Woods, 41, had been released from prison just last year after serving time for rape. He will receive another 30 to 60 years in state prison under the terms of a negotiated guilty plea when he is formally sentenced Dec. 4 by Common Pleas Judge Denis P. Cohen.

Woods is going back behind bars in large part due to the surveillance cameras at a subway station.

On May 26, he was recorded following a 21-year-old woman off the Broad Street Line at the Lehigh Avenue station. Police said he then forced her at knifepoint into an alley, where he raped and robbed her. A tipster who saw the SEPTA video led police to Woods, who was arrested June 14.

Once in custody, police used DNA evidence to link him to the March 14 rape of a 15-year-old girl whom Woods followed from the Lehigh station. He dragged the girl into an alley where he attacked her.

Woods was also positively linked to a June 3 indecent assault of a woman, 24, whom he followed out of a South Philadelphia subway station.
