Sat. Pa. boys’ and girls’ roundup: Weineo spurs Notre Dame victory

Marissa Weineo scored a goal and helped set up a penalty kick as Notre Dame scored twice in the first half en route to downing Bonner-Prendergast, 2-1, in a nonleague girls' soccer game.

With the score tied at 1, Weineo was tripped up in the box in the 32d minute, which set up a go-ahead penalty-kick goal by freshman Phoebe McClernon. Earlier in the half, she put the Irish ahead 1-0 on a goal before Bonner-Prendie's Christmas White scored to tie it up.

Freshman Katie McCullough posted the win with eight saves. She is filling in at goalkeeper, as two of Notre Dame's goalies are out with injury.

In other nonleague action, Lizzie Becker scored in the first half and Germantown Friends earned a 1-1 tie at St. Andrew's in its season opener.

Megan Tracewell had a goal and two assists to lead Garnet Valley past visiting Unionville, 5-1.

Lisa Roman fired in a long shot in the second half to lift Mount St. Joseph over St. Hubert, 3-2. She finished with a pair of goals.

Jess DiGiacomo scored the game-winning goal with less than 4 minutes left in overtime to lift Cardinal O'Hara over Ridley, 2-1.

She scored on a nice pass from Carly Mirarchi.

O'Hara finished with 36 shots, 21 of which were on goal.

Catherine Wroblewski scored with 6 minutes left in regulation. But, Ridley answered back with Hayley Killian's goal with 1 minute left.

Central. Cat Dolan posted the shutout with nine saves and Conestoga easily knocked off host Harriton, 5-0.

Field Hockey

Four different goal scorers and Christina Black's seven saves helped lead host Mount St. Joseph past Merion Mercy, 4-1, in a Catholic Academies game.

Millie Stefanowitz led the way with a goal and assist. Ann Burgoyne, Stephanie Mahoney, and Chrissy Pascali also scored.

Nonleague. Kathleen Pang scored twice and Meghan Radice had three saves as Lower Merion blanked visiting Baldwin, 3-0.

Episcopal Academy relied on its inside forwards to knock off visiting Mercersburg Academy, 7-0. Alana Dumas, a senior, scored twice with two assists. Freshman Margaux Paolino also scored twice with two assists.

Boys' Soccer

Joe Hunter emerged from a scrum in front of the net to tie the game in the 73d minute and Plymouth Whitemarsh held on to tie host Lower Merion, 2-1.

Hunter's goal was off a rebound of Matt Lindheim's free kick from the left side.

Tyler Robinson had given the Aces the lead on a header in the second minute.

Jamison McMain scored nine minutes into regulation and West Chester Rustin added another before halftime en route to passing host Upper Darby, 2-1. Billy Lockfeld posted the win with six saves.

Nate Emery scored with 6 minutes left off a restart to bring West Chester Henderson to a 1-1 tie at Penncrest. The sophomore was set up by Carlos Sierra.

Justin Von Ahnen finished off John Schwien's corner kick in the first half to hand Garnet Valley a 2-1 win over visiting Avon Grove. Von Ahnen also assisted Jason Cavanuagh's goal earlier in the half.

Mike Rispoli fired in a rebound 30 seconds into the game and Great Valley raced to a 3-0 win over visiting Central Bucks West.
