"I was just going for the tackle," said Gozur, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior who doubles as a fullback. "I ripped the ball out, took off, and was lucky enough to get a few blocks along the way."
After running only nine plays from scrimmage and managing just 2 yards of offense in the first half, the defending PIAA District 1 Class AAAA champions racked up 169 yards in the second.
North Penn, ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, evened its record at 1-1. It had opened with a 20-7 loss to top-ranked La Salle.
"It's such a morale booster," Gozur said. "It puts us back on track, gets our hopes up. We needed this."
No. 3-ranked Wood (1-1), which fumbled the ball away four times, saw its 15-game win streak end. It had been perfect since losing to Pittsburgh's Central Catholic, 20-17, in last year's nationally televised opener at Gateway.
"We have to get better at protecting the ball," Vikings coach Steve Devlin said. "In weather like this, you have to take care of the ball and you have to execute."
North Penn's Kyle Mayfield, a 6-0, 205-pound senior tailback, carried 24 times for 135 yards and two TDs. He had only two touches in the opening 24 minutes.
The Knights finished with 171 rushing yards. Gozur chipped in 55 yards on 11 carries. Junior quarterback Austin Shearer attempted only four passes.
Of Gozur's game-changing play, North Penn coach Dick Beck said, "Sometimes you have to get lucky, right? That was huge."
Wood was in front, 10-7, at intermission. In the third quarter, after a 26-yard tying field goal by Brandon Mandes, Mayfield escaped around left end for a 13-yard TD.
Midway through the fourth stanza, Mayfield capped a 10-play, 71-yard series with a 40-yard dash.
At the start of the second quarter, after a five-play drive stalled at the Knights' 20, Nick Visco drilled a 38-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 10-0 advantage.
On Wood's first possession of the night, it put together a 12-play, 80-yard scoring march. It was finished, on third and goal from the 5, by junior Josh Messina's burst up the middle.
Messina spurred the Vikings on offense, carrying 16 times for 99 yards. LaQuille "Dice" Nesbitt, a transfer from Northeast, added 77 yards on 15 rushes.
