Later McCarthy revealed: "The good news in all of this, is that I set up my fantasy lineups beforehand. So there shall be no excuses at this point."
McCarthy was 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA in his sixth big league season.
He still obviously faces a difficult time coming back from the injury, but it appears there may have been an angelic presence at the ballpark far beyond the visitors from Anaheim.
U.S. wins U18 title
The United States, managed by former Yankee Scott Brosius, overcame Canada, 6-2, to take the under-18 world championship Saturday in Seoul, South Korea.
The win was the first U18 title for the United States since 1999 - which is kind of amazing, and shows how much the part of the world that also plays our national pastime has caught up with us.
Chicago Cubs catcher Steve Clevenger was suspended for a game by MLB for his role in a benches-clearing incident against the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
In the sixth inning, a pitch from Lendy Castillo to Bryce Harper was low and really inside. Clevenger appeared not to move his glove to get it.
Both dugouts and bullpens emptied - but because it's baseball and not hockey, there was no physical contact made, except for Clevenger's pushing Washington's Michael Morse. Clevenger also missed a slap at the Nats' Ian Desmond (again, it's not hockey), who jumped back and knocked down umpire Bill Miller.
Or, like getting socks
On Friday, the Nats' Mark DeRosa contemplated having idled Stephen Strasburg on the bench as his teammates likely play the first postseason baseball in the nation's capital since 1933: "He'll be like a Christmas present that you can't open."
