Temple, Duke have Dec. 8 hoops date

Temple will take on perennial basketball power Duke at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., on Dec. 8, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority announced on Monday. The Owls will play the Blue Devils in the second game of a doubleheader that also will have St. Peter's facing Loyola, Md.

Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils have a 19-1 record at the Izod Center, winning five NCAA East Regional finals.

Fran Dunphy's Owls have won 79 games the last three seasons. Temple is one of 13 schools to make the last five NCAA tournaments.

"Coach Dunphy is a longtime friend and a terrific coach," Krzyzewski said. "He has built a tremendous program at Temple and it should be a very competitive game."

Women's soccer. Holy Family got a goal from Melissa Benson (Little Flower) but the host Tigers (0-4-0) lost, 2-1, to Shippensburg (2-2-1).

Benson scored on a header off a direct kick from Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) for the game's first goal.

Villanova's Victoria Gersh, Taylor Houck (Germantown Academy) and Heidi Sabatura, along with La Salle's Kelsey Haycook, Courney Niemiec (Little Flower) and Renee Washington, were named to the all-tournament team for the Villanova Classic that was played on Friday and Sunday.

Penn State Abington goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference defensive student-athlete of the week.

College of New Jersey goalkeeper Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill West) was named New Jersey Athletic Conference defensive player of the week.

Women's volleyball. Lincoln lost, 3-0, to visiting Chowan in a CIAA Northern Division match, with scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-8 at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.

Cynthia Johnson led the way for the Lions (0-3) with four kills, while Sharay DuBose added three kills and six assists. Erica McClain (Kennett) finished with five assists.

Penn State Abington's Abby Millan was named the NEAC Women's Volleyball student-athlete of the week.

The Atlantic Ten Conference named Temple's Elyse Burkert its offensive player of the week.

Football. Villanova quarterback John Robertson was named Colonial Athletic Association rookie of the week.

Widener quarterback Chris Haupt and defensive end Chad Gravinese (Clearview) were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference weekly honor roll.

Lycoming defensive lineman Nate Oropollo (Cardinal O'Hara) was named a Beyond Sports college athlete of the week.

Men's soccer. Ursinus forward Ryan Butler was named as the Centennial Conference co-offensive player of the week.

Villanova midfielder Oscar Umar was named Philadelphia Soccer Six player of the week, while Wildcats defender Tal Bublil was honored as Philadelphia Soccer Six defensive player of the week.

Penn midfielder Sam Engs was named Philadelphia Soccer Six rookie of the week.

Penn State defender Owen Griffith was named the Big Ten defensive player of the week.

Field hockey. Villanova's Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) was named to the Big East honor roll.

Neumann goaltender Nicole Galvin was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) honor roll.

College of New Jersey goaltender Roisin Dougherty (Ocean City) was named NJAC rookie of the week.

Women's tennis. Penn State Abington's Jenny Abraham (Central) was named NEAC student-athlete of the week.
