IT'S UNLIKELY that Nick Sundberg's name will ever be mentioned in the same sentence as NFL tough guys Bednarik, Butkus, Mean Joe, Tatum, Youngblood or Dawkins.

But don't sell Sundberg short.

The Redskins' long snapper played the second half of Sunday's win over the Saints with a broken left arm.

Sundberg said he suffered the injury with a little under a minute to go in the first half when his arm was smashed between a helmet and a facemask on a blocked punt that the Saints returned for a touchdown.

The undrafted Sundberg, in his third year with the Redskins, said he refused to get an X-ray because he wanted to continue to play.

"I think at the end of the day you've got to look at yourself and see what you're made of," Sundberg said Monday. "It was terrible, but I felt like I really didn't have another option."

At one point, Sundberg said he searched out Washington rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and asked a favor.

"Dude," Sundberg said to RGIII, "my arm hurts so bad, and it hurts so much worse to throw punt snaps . . . Don't make us punt again."

Sundberg snapped the ball seven times in the second half, on two extra points, two field goals and three punts.

Sundberg, who was sporting a cast on Monday, will be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks. The Redskins are holding tryouts for a replacement today. Wimps need not apply.

A celibate-tion

Players on the Italian soccer team Napoli have an odd team rule.

According to an Italian newspaper, the team's doctor wants players to avoid sex for 48 hours prior to a match. His reasoning: It helps prevent injuries.

"Avoiding sexual activity 2 days before a game is fundamental to prevent muscular strains, contractions or inflammations," Alfonso De Nicola told the Corriere del Mezzogiorno. "It is the rule for our squad."

Geez, Wilt Chamberlain never could have played for these guys.
