Armed man shot by Camden police after brief chase

Posted: September 12, 2012

An armed 20-year-old man was shot by Camden police after a brief foot pursuit Tuesday afternoon, a spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said.

Around 2 p.m., Camden police made a car stop in the area of 32d Street and Westfield Avenue, said spokesman Jason Laughlin.

The driver in the stopped car "put the vehicle in reverse and drove backwards into the police car," Laughlin said.

Armed with a gun, the motorist ran from the scene with three officers in pursuit, jumping over several fences before encountering two other officers who had "circled around and cut him off," Laughlin said.

Officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, which he failed to do, and he was shot once, Laughlin said.

The wounded man was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was last reported in surgery.

The shooting was under investigation Tuesday night by the Prosecutor's Office.
