Free beer to toast Yuengling ranking

Posted: September 15, 2012

On Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m., Yuengling will hand out a bottle of free beer at participating bars in Philadelphia to toast its designation as the largest American-owned brewery.

" ... We believe that Philly was, and will continue to be, a huge part of our success," the Pottsville-based brewer said on its website. "We'd love to show our gratitude with a Philly-wide lager toast to the city."

Find participating bars at http://www.yuengling.com/ You must be 21 to enter the site.

The title was previously held by Boston Beer Co., maker of the Sam Adams line of brews. Yuengling also is the oldest brewer in the nation, founded in 1829.

Although the two companies account for a little more than 2 percent of all the beer brewed in the United States, they have become the largest American-owned beer makers thanks to the sales in recent years of Anheuser-Busch and Coors to foreign owners.
