Sideshow: Zombies score a win at box office

Posted: September 17, 2012

Well, it wasn't hard to see this one coming, given America's love affair with carnivorous corpses. Resident Evil: Retribution, with Milla Jovovich out for her fifth romp as Alice in zombieland, worked its dark magic at the box office over the weekend, raking in $21.1 million in domestic receipts and filleting the sunny Finding Nemo (3-D version), which nevertheless finished second with a not-too-fishy haul of $17.5 million. A box-office exorcism dropped The Possession, which led the movie pack last weekend, to third place, with an estimated $5.8 million. Lawless, a tale of Virginia bootleggers starring Shia LeBeouf and Tom Hardy, finished fourth with $4.2 million in gate receipts, which is a lot more than you can make with an old still down in the holler. The animated spookfest ParaNorman took in $3 million.

'Idol' chatter

Rapper and singer Nicki Minaj and country singer Keith Urban will join Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey as American Idol judges, the Fox network announced Sunday. Jackson is the only judge left from the original trio of arbiters that also included scowling Simon Cowell and perky Paula Abdul.

The duchess is not amused

The Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, is mighty upset about those topless pics of her a French pararazzo snapped during a vacation in Provence. So is her hub, Prince William. They're so upset that they plan to file a criminal complaint Monday with French prosecutors, William's office announced Sunday. They've already sued the French mag that published the pics.
