Fri. Pa. boys', girls' roundup: Germantown Friends wins late

Sydney Weigert's late scoring surge helped Germantown Friends come back on Friday afternoon and top host Friends' Central, 4-3, in a Friends Schools League field hockey match.

Weigert netted her third goal of the game with seven minutes left in overtime to lift the Tigers. She tied the game with just 41 seconds left in regulation.

Goalie Maddie Andrews had four saves for the win. Brianna Folwell posted three saves for the Phoenix, and Alyssa Holt scored twice.

Inter-Ac. Sophomore Gabby Carlini posted three saves for her sixth shutout of the season, and Notre Dame eased past host Germantown Academy, 7-0.

Junior forward Moira Putsch led the way with three goals and a pair of assists. She scored two of Notre Dame's four second-half goals. Emily Faught chipped in with two goals.

Catholic Academies. Stephanie Mahoney scored three times as host Mount St. Joseph did all its scoring in the first half for a 4-0 win over Villa Joseph Marie.

Christina Black, a junior, posted her second shutout of the season with three saves. Kate Fitzpatrick and Millie Stefanowicz had one assist each.

Nonleague. Tori Hirschbuhl scored in the first five minutes and host Archbishop Ryan held on to top Northeast, 1-0.

Girls' Soccer

Eleanor Johns scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, as Central knocked off Science Leadership Academy, 2-1, in a Public League game.

Johns, a junior, netted the winner seven minutes into overtime. Her first-half goal came in the 26th minute. Sophomore Hannah Baker had the win with five saves.

Also in the Public League, Rachel Gilborges' two goals helped Franklin Towne Charter ease past host Rush, 7-0. The junior captain added a pair of assists, and Alivia Dietsch needed three saves for her fourth shutout.

Inter-Ac. Maddie Stambaugh scored twice, and Nicole Gilmore had a pair of assists as Germantown Academy rolled past visiting Notre Dame, 6-1.

Natalie Toner posted the win with seven saves, and Olivia Gorman chipped in with a goal and one assist.

Boys' Soccer

Colin Moran scored off a rebound in overtime as La Salle knocked off visiting Father Judge, 2-1, in a Catholic League matchup.

Matt Lucas fired a direct kick that bounced off the crossbar with one minute left, and the rebound bounced Moran's way.

Jack Dusing tied the game in regulation when he headed in a throw from Chris McCrea. Anthony D'Angelo posted the win with seven saves.

In other Catholic League action, Archbishop Ryan blanked host Neumann-Goretti, 6-0, to improve to 6-0 in league play.

Michael Fisch and Miguel Rendon led the way with two goals each, and Joe Stone needed just one save for the shutout.

Friends Schools. Shipley and host George School played to a scoreless tie.

Chase Cella had six saves for Shipley, and George School's Aiden Greer recorded eight.

Suburban One. Danny Sheppard scored 36 seconds into the second half to trigger Abington's 3-1 win over visiting Pennsbury.

The Ghosts scored three times after halftime, including a goal from sophomore Matt Devalacqua and senior Chris Tracey.

Public. Atta Ullah scored a career-high five times as Furness rolled past host Kensington, 8-1.

Kelby Espinola scored a pair of goals as Franklin Towne Charter blanked Northeast, 3-0. Adam Stangler added another off a rebound of Espinola's free kick.

Nonleague. Christian Academy used Matt Crockett's two goals to ease past host Calvary Christian, 7-1. Evan Needs added a pair of assists to go along with his one goal.

Drew Vernon scored once and added an assist as Perkiomen Valley knocked off visiting Phoenixville, 2-1. Corey Jackson posted the win with a pair of saves.

Basketball

This weekend, two of the area's top recruits will make official college visits.

Vaux guard Rysheed Jordan is at St. John's, while St. Joseph's Prep guard Miles Overton is at Wake Forest. Both are seniors.
