Sat. S.J. football roundup: Collingswood edges Overbrook

Posted: September 23, 2012

Jordan Wallace's rollout strike to Steven Copeland broke a scoreless tie in the fourth quarter and lifted Collingswood to a 6-0 win at Overbrook (N.J.) in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division matchup Saturday.

After a designed rollout to the right, Wallace scrambled back to the left, then tossed a 9-yard touchdown.

"Their quarterback made a great play," Overbrook coach Wade Inge said. "It was just like Michael Vick's touchdown to Jeremy Maclin against the Ravens."

Collingswood (1-3 overall, 1-0 division) recovered its squib kick on the ensuing kickoff and concluded a dominant defensive effort by running the clock and holding Overbrook (1-2, 0-1) scoreless.

"It was a back-and-forth, defensive game," Inge said. "A couple of times we stopped them on fourth and short and they stopped us on fourth and short."

Nonleague

Cedar Creek 21, Oakcrest 7 - Caleb Graves delivered a tie-breaking, 15-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter, and that proved to be the difference in Cedar Creek's win against visiting Oakcrest.

After Graves' score made it 14-7, QB Damon Mitchell expanded the Pirates' lead to 14.

Mitchell put Cedar Creek (3-0) on the board first in the opening quarter before Oakcrest's Quaashie Jetter tied the game for Oakcrest (0-3) before halftime with an 8-yard run.

Burlington Township 29, Lawrence 16 -

Khalil Trotman led Burlington Township to a road win with three long touchdown passes and another score on the ground.

After falling behind by two scores in the first quarter, Trotman threw a 76-yard bomb to Mike Thomas, then put the Falcons (3-0) ahead with an 81-yard screen pass to Nick Conway.

Trotman connected with Conway again in the third quarter, this time a 67-yard touchdown strike, and opened up a 29-14 lead with a rushing score in the quarter.

Colonial Patriot

Paulsboro 42, Haddon Township 13 - Zach Funk had a pair of touchdown tosses and was almost perfect for host Paulsboro (2-1, 1-0) in the win over Haddon Township (1-2, 0-1).

Funk completed 9 of 10 passes, throwing for 81 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for a score.

De'Shaun Burgess, who punched in a 1-yard score in the first quarter, caught Funk's first touchdown to give Paulsboro a 14-point edge.

Funk ran for a 1-yard score late in the half and completed a 6-yard touchdown strike to Yusuf Stafford to open a 29-point lead in the third quarter. The teams traded touchdowns in the final period.
