Propane tank truck catches fire in Bucks

Posted: September 25, 2012

A propane tank truck crashed and burned Monday morning in a mostly rural stretch of Bedminster, Bucks County, injuring two people and prompting an evacuation of nearby homes and businesses.

The accident on Route 611, involving the tanker and a second vehicle, sparked a stubborn fire near Creamery Road. Both drivers were reportedly injured.

Instead of attacking the fire, firefighters poured water on the propane tank to keep it cool and prevent it from exploding. Emergency personnel initially planned to evacuate buildings within a half-mile of the fire, but extended the boundary to a mile as the blaze continued.

An evacuation center was set up at St. John the Baptist Church and School, a mile north of the burning truck. By late afternoon, the fire was controlled and most evacuees were sent home. - Peter Mucha and Bill Reed
