Yom Kippur begins at sundown

Posted: September 26, 2012

Yom Kippur, considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, begins at sunset today.

Also known as the Day of Atonement, the day is marked with prayers and fasting.

It also brings to an end the 10-day period known as the High Holy Days, or the Days of Awe, which began with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

The harvest-related festival of Sukkot begins five days after Yom Kippur.
