Police identify two Philadelphia slaying victims

Police this morning released the names of two men killed in separate shootings in West Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Maurice Thomas, 28, was shot once in the torso while resisting a robbery about 9:40 p.m. on the 1200 block of South Millick Street.

The victim, who lives on the block, was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University Pennsylvania at 10:27 p.m.

Police were looking for the gunman.

Stephen Casey, 23, was shot nine times and killed during a gun battle between the occupants of two cars on Cobbs Creek Parkway near Catharine Street around 3 p.m.

A 21-year-old man also was shot in the arm during the exchange of fire and police believe both victims had fired at each other.

Casey lived of the 5400 block of Spring Street in West Philadelphia.

Police found 9mm and .45-caliber shell casings at the scene and recovered a .45-caliber handgun in the car Casey was riding in.

No word yet on an arrest.
