Thurs. Pa. boys' roundup: King snags late victory

Shareef Stewart netted the game-winning goal in the final minute as Martin Luther King pulled out a 4-3 victory against visiting Bodine in a Public League boys' soccer match on Thursday.

Stewart, a first-year player who spent the previous three seasons on the football team, has scored two goals as a forward.

The deciding goal came after he beat a Bodine defender to a loose ball inside the penalty area and tucked it under the sprawling goalkeeper.

Bodine's Farid Amari scored a hat trick, including a goal off a direct free kick from 40 yards.

In other Public League play:

Southern received two goals each from seniors Paukhen Khai and Abdul Rahman and downed visiting Engineering & Science, 6-0. Rams goalkeeper Abass made four saves to earn his fourth shutout in five games and keep Southern undefeated in league play.

Five players scored goals for Franklin Learning Center as it defeated host Carroll, 6-0.

Senior Mustafa Al-Ghazzawi scored his team-leading 10th goal to lead Frankford past visiting Palumbo, 3-0. Goalkeeper Josue Ortega recorded his third consecutive shutout to keep the Pioneers undefeated in league play.

Philadelphia Academy Charter broke a 1-1, second-half tie with a goal from Tim Zink in the 52d minute to sink host Bartram, 3-1.

Central.   Nick Scarpato's breakaway goal 21 minutes into the first half was all Springfield (Delco) needed as it slipped by visiting Garnet Valley, 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Dave Sousa had 12 saves, recording his fourth shutout of the year for the Cougars.

Emanuel Amao rocketed a free kick from 25 yards into the net with 18 minutes to play to give visiting Upper Darby a 1-0 win at Strath Haven.

Goalkeeper Ryan Johnson had four saves for the Royals, earning his first shutout of the season.

Bicentennial.   Sophomore Andrew Shannon scored his first career hat trick as Devon Prep defeated visiting Phil-Mont Christian, 5-1.

Shannon, who had two second-half goals, was assisted on his final tally by his older brother Ryan, a senior.


Holy Ghost Prep sophomore Reilly Erhardt shot a 4-under-par 68 to win the Bicentennial Athletic League golf championship at Makefield Highlands Golf Club in Yardley.

Steve Cerbara, also of Holy Ghost, finished in second with a 72.

Calvary Christian's Mark Farley shot a 73.

Water Polo

Malvern Prep defeated host Germantown Academy 14-6, in an Inter-Ac League match. M.P. Salimas, the Friars' senior center, had seven goals, and Adam Binos recorded 17 saves.
