Driver is charged with killing man at Trainer trailer park

A 46-year-old maintenance worker was charged with homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence after the truck he was driving struck a man sitting in front of a mobile home in Trainer, Delaware County.

Police Chief Fran Priscopo said the accident occurred about 7 p.m. Friday. He identified the victim as William Star, a resident of the Parkview Mobile Home Park in the 4300 block of West Ninth Street in Trainer who was in his 70s.

"It was a tragic incident," Priscopo said. "The victim was a phenomenal person, a war veteran. He never would have bothered a soul."

Priscopo said the driver, Edward Shaw, a maintenance man at the trailer park, apparently got into the truck after engaging in a heated dispute with another man about whether the truck should be moved. After getting into the driver's seat, the chief said, Shaw gunned the engine and struck the victim and the mobile home about 30 feet away.

Shaw ran into woods near the mobile-home park and from there went to the home of an acquaintance in the 1500 block of Huddle Avenue in Lower Chichester, Priscopo said. The occupants of the house put Shaw on the phone with police, and he offered to turn himself in.

Priscopo said Shaw apparently didn't intend to strike the victim, and was remorseful in his conversation with police. He was being held at the Delaware County Prison.
