Mark Pinson | College instructor, 72

Mark Pinson, 72, a graduate of Central High School who taught at Harvard University and other institutions before retiring in Philadelphia in the 1990s, died of complications of diabetes at Atria Center City, a facility for seniors.

Mr. Pinson grew up in the city's Feltonville section. He was awarded a four-year Mayor's Scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating, Mr. Pinson did graduate studies at Princeton University and Harvard University, where he earned a doctorate in Balkan history in 1970.

At Harvard, Mr. Pinson was a lecturer in anthropology and history. He also taught at Tel Aviv University in Israel, the University of Massachusetts, and Gratz College in Melrose Park. He retired to Philadelphia in the early 1990s.

Mr. Pinson was fluent in several languages, including Hebrew and Russian. He was a supporter of the State of Israel. Mr. Pinson was an avid book collector, specializing in works related to the Balkans and Judaism in Eastern Europe and America.

He is survived by his wife, Tre Forlano. A memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at Atria Center City, 150 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia.
