A dump truck driver who was killed in a fiery crash today under a New Jersey Turnpike overpass is believed to be a 49-year-old Essex County resident, state police said.

The crash occurred before 10 a.m. under the overpass carrying I-195 over the turnpike at Exit 7A in Mercer County. A turnpike widening project is under way in the area.

Officials, who believe the driver was from Belleville, are awaiting official confirmation on the victim's identity.

State police have since reopened the turnpike's northbound lanes, where had been closed at Exit 4, officials said this afternoon. But Exit 9 southbound to Exit 7A on the Turnpike remained closed, authorities.

Authorities said the eastbound lanes of I-195, which was closed in both directions near the overpass, have also been reopened.

Inspectors were called in to check the overpass for damage and to determine if it was safe.

No word yet on what caused the crash.
