Funeral services set for Overbrook coach Ford

Posted: October 04, 2012

FUNERAL SERVICES will be held Saturday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 57th and Race streets, viewing from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by the service, for former Overbrook High basketball coach Ron Ford, who died last Saturday.

As the school's first African-American basketball coach, Ford guided the Panthers for six seasons ending in 2002. His first and last teams advanced to the Public League quarterfinals and his overall record was 59-84.

As a player, Ford helped Thomas Edison earn a spot in the PL semis in 1958 and was the Inventors' leading scorer in a 49-45 loss to Germantown.

Ford, universally revered, taught at 'Brook for 23 years and was honored, in surprise fashion, at halftime of his stint's final home game, a 74-58 win over archrival West Philadelphia. Players Murvin English and Shawn Ikokwu presented Ford with a plaque as well as a ball autographed by all current players, and even some formers.

"I'm usually shy. It's not my thing to stand up in front of people like that," Ikokwu said that day. "For a man like Mr. Ford, it's no problem. He doesn't just coach. He does lots of extra things for us."
